Ear Candling is a soothing, gentle approach to clearing excess ear wax and impurities from the ears. It may help to relieve pressure caused by colds, sinus congestion and the effects of pressurised atmospheres.
It is thought to have originated from the American Hopi tribe of North Arizona. The word Hopi means "Peaceful Ones" and the Hopi Tribe are known for their knowledge of healing and their spiritual approach to life.
Contrary to what the name implies, the candles are slim, hollow tubes of organically grown flax impregnated with natural ingredients; beeswax, honey extracts, sage, camomile and St Johns Wort.
How do they work?
"When the candle is placed securely in the ear and lit at the top, the rising air column inside the candle begins to heat up. This rising air column creates a mild suction action at the base which helps to loosen compacted ear wax.
At the same time the beeswax and other ingredients make the air inside the candle heavier and it spirals downwards into the ear canal, setting up pressure waves and gentle sound waves which massage the eardrum. As the slightest movement of the eardrum is carried on wards to the middle ear and inner ear, all the structures of the ear receive a gentle massage.
As the ear, nose, sinuses and throat are all interconnected, this has the effect of regulating and balancing pressure in the ears as well as the whole of the upper respiratory tract."

During the treatment each candle takes approximately 10 minutes to burn down. Afterwards the ears and head receive a short massage accompanied with some Reiki around the head and neck area which makes a deeply relaxing 40 minute treatment.
Warning: Ear Candling is not recommended for anyone with a perforated eardrum, grommets or inflammation or infection of the ear.
A 40 minute treatment costs £40

I have been having Ear Candling treatment for many years. I always find it beneficial when I have this treatment within a week of flying. My ears seem to clear a lot quicker.
